| Mission Statement |
|
The Las Vegas Freethought Society (LVFS) is an autonomous nonprofit, educational organization that serves as a forum for freethinkers - atheists, agnostics, humanists and other like-minded individuals in the Las Vegas area.
We promote freethought as a viable alternative to mystical and theistic belief systems.
We promote the Jeffersonian principle of separation of religion and government, the rights of nonreligious people in our society, free inquiry and thought, a naturalistic view of the universe, a reasoned criticism of supernaturalism and a reason-based, secular ethos.
Our membership is open to all like-minded people without regard to race, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, or political or other affiliations.
Our membership includes people who maintain a variety of differing views on political and other topics, but all agree that one can live a meaningful, happy, productive and ethical life without superstitions.

|

| |
We are a nonprofit, democratically organized educational organization. Our membership elects our board, and the board is charged with effectively running the organization and reporting to the membership. We are an autonomous organization, though have loose affiliations with several organizations.

|
What is a freethinker? |
| |
One definition (www.ffrf.org / nontracts / freethinker.php) is: "a person who forms opinions about religion on the basis of reason, independently of tradition, authority, or established belief." Freethinkers include atheists, agnostics, humanists, secularists, rationalists and other like-minded individuals.
|
|
Do freethinkers or LVFS have a political agenda? |
| |
Freethinkers, as religious minorities in the US, are very concerned about state-church separation and related events. Beyond that, freethinkers tend to be politically active individuals. LVFS, as a non-political non-profit organization, does not take political positions. LVFS membership is open to like-minded individuals regardless of their political leanings. Our membership includes liberals who think libertarians are a bunch of selfish, materialistic Randroids; libertarians who think people on the left are a bunch of tree-hugging, over-idealistic hippies and mainly people between these to extremes. The history of freethought includes such names as Karl Marx and Ayn Rand, so LVFS members can disagree on issues too, yet still remain reasonable.

Who can join LVFS? |
| |
Our membership is open to anyone who agrees with our mission statement and list of purposes. Our membership is open to all like-minded people without regard to race, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, or political or other affiliations.

|
How much does membership cost? |
| |
LVFS offers two levels of membership, regular membership and associate membership. Regular membership annual dues are $20.00 single or $30.00 couple or family. Regular members receive e-mail announcements regarding LFVS activities, are invited to attend any and all LVFS functions and can vote for and hold office.
Associate membership is free. We are possibly the only freethought organization in the country offering this. We can afford to do this as we keep our operating costs minimal by, among other things, taking advantage of complimentary web hosting by humanists.net. Associate members receive e-mail announcements regarding LVFS activities, are invited to attend any and all LVFS functions, but can't vote for nor hold office. Associate membership is perfect for anyone with a limited budget. Associate membership is limited to full-time or part-time residents of Nevada or the Las Vegas area, including Northwest Arizona, Southwestern Utah and southeastern California, or frequent visitors to the Las Vegas area.
